What to photograph for a Bangalore business listing: a monthly photo plan that survives Google review
Upload four to six new photos to your Google Business Profile every month, shot on a phone at your actual premises, and file each one under the right category. Photos do not rank a listing by themselves. They lift the engagement Google counts, which is clicks, calls and direction requests, and that engagement feeds local ranking. Uploads get rejected for a small number of reasons, and text covering too much of the frame is the most common one in Bangalore.
How many photos does a Bangalore business need, and how often
Four to six new images a month is the working floor, spread across the month rather than dumped in one sitting. Across 34 Bangalore profiles we manage or audit, the ones adding media at least twice a month averaged 61% more profile views in the Performance tab between March and July 2026 than the ones that uploaded a set at verification and then stopped. The often-quoted figure that listings with 100 or more photos get roughly five times the calls of an average listing is worth reading as correlation: busy businesses accumulate photos, and adding 100 this weekend will not multiply your calls on Monday.
What does move is recency. A profile whose newest photo is eleven months old reads as a business that may have closed, both to a person scrolling and to the systems ranking it.
The shot list worth working through
Start with the frames a customer needs before deciding to travel:
- The exterior from the road, at the angle someone arrives from, with the signage readable in daylight
- The entrance and whatever parking exists, which in Koramangala and Indiranagar is the first question people have
- A wide interior shot with the lights you normally use, not the lights you switched on for the photo
- Your team working, faces visible, no stock models
- The service or product mid-delivery rather than styled on a white background
- One landmark shot, the lane or the building next door, because addresses in Yelahanka New Town, HSR Layout and Whitefield are routinely pinned two hundred metres off on Maps
A Jayanagar bakery we worked with in February 2026 replaced nine stock images with fourteen phone photos of its counter, its ovens and its staff. Direction requests rose from 38 to 91 a month by April, with no change to its category, its posts or its ad spend. Ramya, who runs the counter, said the only comment she gets now is that people recognise the shopfront before they reach it.
Why your photos get marked not approved
Google runs every upload through an automated check and sometimes a human one, and the rejections cluster in a few places. Text over roughly a tenth of the image is the usual culprit, which catches every offer poster and price card people try to post as a photo. Watermarks and studio borders trigger it too, as do blurry frames, screenshots, and images that do not match the business category.
If an image comes back as not approved, wait 24 to 48 hours, because a fair number clear on their own once indexing catches up. If it is still rejected, re-export the original without the border, the logo overlay or the text, and upload again. Photos are also one of the things that does not reliably come back after a profile is restored, so keep local copies. If your listing has already been pulled, how to read a suspension reason and get reinstated covers that separately.
Clinics and restaurants have a harder version of this
Healthcare listings carry rules that a retail shop does not. Patient faces need written consent before they go anywhere near a public profile, before and after images invite scrutiny and are risky under Indian medical advertising norms, and any claim written into the image itself will fail review. What works instead is the room, the equipment, the reception desk, the team, and the qualifications board. A spine practice such as Neospinex in North Bangalore or a multispecialty polyclinic like Chitra's Lifeline Clinic in Yelahanka New Town can build a full photo set without a single patient in frame, and the profiles that do this well are the ones we see holding position in the map pack.
Restaurants have the opposite problem: too many food photos and no shot of the seating, the entrance or the parking, which is what a family at 8pm is checking.
Checking whether any of it is working
Open the Performance tab and compare two 28-day windows, not two weeks. Watch calls, direction requests and website clicks rather than photo views, since photo views rise with anything you upload and tell you very little. If calls and direction requests are flat after three months of consistent uploads, the problem is upstream in your categories, your hours or your reviews, not in your photography.
Frequently asked questions
Do photos uploaded by customers help or hurt my listing?
They help. Customer photos carry weight because they are independent, and profiles with a healthy mix of owner and customer images tend to hold engagement better. You cannot delete them, but you can report a photo that breaks Google's content rules.
Should I geotag photos before uploading?
No. Google strips EXIF data from uploads, so geotagging does nothing for ranking. The time spent on geotagging apps is better spent shooting one more real photo of your premises.
What size should Google Business Profile photos be?
JPG or PNG, between 10KB and 5MB, at least 720 by 720 pixels. Shoot at your phone's normal resolution and upload without compressing through WhatsApp, which strips quality and often triggers the blurry-image rejection.
How quickly do new photos appear on Maps?
Usually within a few minutes to a few hours. If a photo has not appeared after 48 hours, check the Photos tab for a not-approved flag rather than assuming it uploaded.
