Three Google Ads settings you can never change: GST, currency, and time zone for Bangalore accounts

Three settings you pick in the first few minutes of creating a Google Ads account are permanent: billing country, currency, and time zone. Google will not let you edit them later, because they decide how you are billed and how every report is dated. Getting one wrong means opening a new account and starting over on learning data, so these are worth five slow minutes before you touch a campaign.

Which Google Ads settings can never be changed?

Billing country, currency, and time zone. Google Ads Help says currency is set permanently at account creation and cannot be updated, since it determines how you are billed. Time zone is treated the same way, because reporting is built on it. One narrow exception exists: Google can reset the time zone on a manager account once, and only eastward, so a GMT account can move to India Standard Time but not the other way.

For a business operating in Bangalore, the combination you want is India as the billing country, INR as the currency, and (GMT+05:30) India Standard Time.

The mistake is easier to make than it sounds. Signing up while logged into a Google account first created abroad pre-fills a different country, and accounts built by an overseas freelancer often land on USD without anyone reading the dropdown. Of the 23 Bangalore accounts handed to us for cleanup between January and July 2026, 4 were billing in USD and 6 were reporting on a time zone that was not IST.

Does the currency choice cost you money?

A little every month, and a lot in clarity. A USD account converts spend at Google's rate on the billing date, so an identical campaign shows a different rupee figure month to month for reasons unrelated to performance. Across the four USD accounts we reviewed, that drift moved reported monthly spend by 1.4 to 3.1 percent in the first half of 2026, enough to make a real 5 percent improvement in cost per lead look like noise.

Payments matter more. UPI and net banking are tied to an INR account with an Indian billing country. A USD account pushes you to an international card, which is where budget interruptions usually start.

Where does GST fit, and why does it matter before you spend?

Google Ads billing in India runs through a payments profile holding your billing address, tax details, and payment method. Inside it is an India tax information section where your GSTIN goes. Advertising carries GST at 18 percent, and when the invoice comes from Google's Indian entity that 18 percent appears on the invoice. A GST registered business can claim it as input tax credit, provided the invoice carries the right GSTIN.

That condition is the trap. Invoices already generated are not reissued when you add a GSTIN later, so credit on earlier spend is usually gone. One Yelahanka clinic we picked up in late 2025 had run about Rs 38,000 a month for five months before anyone filled that field in. Close to Rs 34,000 of GST was never claimable, on an account otherwise managed carefully.

Two details save arguments with your accountant. The legal business name on the payments profile should match your GST registration, not your brand name. And if an overseas Google entity is invoicing you rather than Google India, the 18 percent moves to you under reverse charge instead of appearing on the invoice, so tell your CA which entity bills you before the first month closes.

What does the time zone setting control?

More than the date stamp on a report. Your daily budget resets at midnight in the account time zone, your ad schedule runs on it, and every reporting day is defined by it. An account on Pacific Time resets its budget around 12:30 in the afternoon IST, so the money you set aside for a Monday gets spent across two different Indian days.

Rahul, who runs a two-chair salon in HSR Layout, found this the slow way. "My report said Sunday was my strongest day, so I pushed budget there for two months. The account was on New York time. Half of that Sunday spend was Saturday evening here, which is when people were booking."

Dayparting only works when the clock matches the business. A Bangalore clinic taking calls from nine to eight cannot schedule around its own peak on a foreign time zone.

What to check before the first rupee goes out

  • Billing country set to India, currency INR, time zone (GMT+05:30) India Standard Time
  • GSTIN and legal business name entered in the payments profile before the first campaign goes live
  • A billing method that supports UPI or net banking rather than an international card
  • Conversion tracking installed and firing, so the first month of data is worth keeping

If you want the settings that follow these, our walk-through of the nine Google Ads default settings covers the ones Google switches on for you after the account exists.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my Google Ads currency after the account is created?

No. Currency is set permanently at account creation because billing depends on it. A different currency means a new account, chosen at setup, which also means starting fresh on campaign learning data.

Can I change the Google Ads time zone later?

Not on a standard account. Google can reset the time zone on a manager account once, and only eastward, for example from GMT to IST. Plan on the setting being permanent and pick India Standard Time at creation.

Do I need a GST number to run Google Ads in India?

No, you can advertise without one. If your business is GST registered, entering your GSTIN in the payments profile before the first invoice is what lets you claim the 18 percent as input tax credit. Earlier invoices are not reissued.

What happens if my Google Ads account is on the wrong time zone?

Your reporting days, ad schedule, and daily budget reset all follow that time zone, so day of week and hour of day data are shifted. Schedules built on it miss your real peak hours until the account is rebuilt on IST.
