Google Business Profile chat in Bangalore: what replaced the old message button
Google shut down the native chat button and call history log on Business Profile on 31 July 2024. In its place is a setup step under Contact where a business turns on WhatsApp or a text-message number for customers to reach it, and the option only shows up for accounts in the regions Google has enabled, so a Bangalore listing has to be checked rather than assumed.
What happened to the old chat feature
Google's own Business Profile help documentation on the change states plainly that "the chat and call history features are no longer available in your Business Profile" as of that July 2024 date. Anyone who had message threads or a call log sitting in their dashboard lost the in-app record of them; Google offered a window through Google Takeout to export the old conversations before the cutoff, but that window is long closed by now. If a Bangalore business owner still has a bookmark or a training document telling staff to check the "Messages" tab in Business Profile, that instruction is out of date and the tab it refers to no longer works the way it describes.
How messaging works now
The replacement lives under a different path: Edit profile, then Contact, then the Chat field. From there a business picks one channel, WhatsApp or a text-message number, enters the relevant number, and saves. Google's Business Profile help page on chatting with customers is specific that the two options are separate choices, not a combined inbox: "if you add both options, only the text message option will be shown to customers," which means a business cannot offer both and let Google pick the best one per visitor. It is one channel, chosen in advance. The same page also notes chat is "available for select regions and might not be available for your Business Profile," which is worth checking directly on the listing rather than assuming it is live just because a competitor down the road has a chat button.
Which channel makes sense for a Bangalore listing
WhatsApp is the obvious pick for most local businesses here, and it is usually the wrong instinct to default to a plain text-message number instead just because it feels more "official." A Bangalore customer messaging a clinic or a shop through Business Profile is far more likely to already have WhatsApp open than to be comfortable typing into a bare SMS thread with no name attached, no read receipts, and no way to send a photo of a symptom or a product. The trade-off is that WhatsApp brings its own commerce and business-messaging policies to manage, which is a separate setup from turning the toggle on inside Business Profile itself.
None of that is a reason to switch a channel on and then leave it unattended. A profile that shows a chat option and then goes quiet for days does more damage than no chat option at all, because the customer has already committed to that channel and gets nothing back. Studio Happens has written before about the discipline this requires for a WhatsApp Business setup for clinic appointment reminders, and the same rule applies here in reverse: reminders go out on a schedule someone controls, but an inbound chat button on a live Business Profile can get a message at any hour, and somebody has to own checking it.
Why the stakes are different for a clinic
A retail shop that misses a chat message loses a browsing customer who will probably just call or walk in instead. A clinic that turns on chat and misses a message loses a patient who chose that channel specifically because calling felt like more friction, often someone trying to ask a sensitive question before deciding whether to book at all. Neospinex, the spine and neurosurgery practice run by Dr. Akshay Hari in North Bangalore, and Chitra's Lifeline Clinic in Yelahanka New Town are both the kind of small-team healthcare operation where a single unanswered chat is not a rounding error, it is one missed patient out of a much smaller pool than a large hospital sees in a day. For a practice like that, the decision to turn chat on should come with a real answer to "who checks this, and how often," which takes longer to settle than the five-minute setting itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Business Profile chat still available in 2026?
Not in its original form. The native in-app chat and call history Google ran until 31 July 2024 are gone. What is available now is a Contact-section setting that routes messages to WhatsApp or a text number, and only where Google has enabled it for that account's region.
Does turning on WhatsApp messaging through Business Profile cost anything?
Turning on the field itself is free. Costs only enter the picture if a business later adopts WhatsApp's own business-messaging or commerce tools beyond the basic number a customer can message, which is a separate decision from the Business Profile setting.
Can a business offer both WhatsApp and a text number at once?
No. Google's help documentation is explicit that adding both shows only the text-message option to customers, so a business has to choose one channel rather than list both and let a visitor pick.
What happens if a business turns on chat and stops checking it?
Google's current help documentation does not describe an automatic shutoff for a slow reply. But an unanswered channel sitting visibly on a live listing reads worse to a customer than having no chat option at all, since they can see it was available and simply ignored.
