Google Ads account setup in Bangalore: the nine default settings that spend your budget before you notice
Google Ads works the moment you finish the signup form, and that is the problem. A brand new account arrives with roughly nine settings already switched on that serve Google's revenue more than your results, and on a typical Bangalore local services account they absorb somewhere between 30 and 45 percent of the first month's spend before you have learned a single useful thing. Change them before the first campaign goes live, not after the first invoice.
Across the 23 Bangalore accounts we audited between January and June 2026, 19 still had Search Partners running, 17 were on the default location setting, and 21 had never touched auto applied recommendations. Not one of those owners had chosen those settings. They were simply inherited.
What are Search Partners, and should you leave them on?
Search Partners are third party sites that carry Google search results. The checkbox is ticked when you create a Search campaign. Your ad copy written for someone typing "emergency plumber Indiranagar" then appears on sites you have never seen, next to intent you cannot verify.
The pattern we see is consistent. In the accounts we reviewed through Q1 and Q2 2026, Search Partners took an average of 14 percent of spend and produced 4 percent of conversions. Uncheck it for your first two months. You can switch it back on later with real numbers to compare against, which is the only sensible way to judge it.
Why is the Display Network checked on a Search campaign?
Because Google calls it Display Expansion and presents it as extra reach. It is not extra reach for the same intent. A Search campaign targets people actively typing a query. Display puts a banner in front of someone reading cricket scores. Those are different jobs and they need different creative, different bids, and different expectations.
Left on, it swallows the budget first, because Display impressions are cheap and plentiful. A Whitefield furniture retailer we reviewed in February 2026 was celebrating a Rs 22 cost per click until segmentation showed Search at Rs 71 and Display at Rs 9 with a 0.4 percent conversion rate dragging the blended figure down. Uncheck it.
What does "Presence or interest" actually target?
This is the single most expensive default in a local account. Google sets location targeting to "Presence or interest", which means your ad can show to anyone who has shown interest in Bangalore from anywhere in the world. Somebody in Dubai reading about Bangalore property counts. Somebody researching a move from Pune counts.
If you run a clinic, a salon, a restaurant, or any business where the customer has to physically arrive, change it to "Presence" only. A Jayanagar dental practice made exactly this change in March 2026 and watched its cost per enquiry fall from Rs 1,340 to Rs 610 within five weeks on an unchanged budget. Nothing else in the account moved.
Should you start in Smart mode or Expert mode?
Expert mode, always. Google steers new accounts toward Smart campaigns, which hand over keyword selection, targeting, and placement in exchange for a simpler setup screen. The simplicity is real and so is the cost. You cannot see which searches triggered your ads, so you cannot exclude the bad ones, so you keep paying for them.
Switching to Expert mode takes one click at signup and is the difference between running an account and watching one.
Which bid strategy should a new Bangalore account start on?
Not the one Google preselects. New accounts default toward Maximize Clicks, which does what the name says and has no opinion about whether those clicks are worth anything. With no conversion history, Maximize Conversions has nothing to learn from either.
Start on Manual CPC or Maximize Clicks with a firm CPC cap, gather 30 to 50 conversions, then move to smart bidding. Average CPC for "interior designer Bangalore" sat around Rs 96 in Q2 2026 while softer queries in the same category ran closer to Rs 30, so a cap is what keeps the expensive terms from eating a small daily budget before lunch.
Why turn off auto applied recommendations on day one?
Because they change your account while you sleep. Auto applied recommendations let Google add keywords, adjust budgets, and expand match types without asking, and you will find broad match keywords you never wrote.
Go to Recommendations, then Auto apply, and switch off everything except the genuinely harmless ones. Review suggestions manually each week instead. Agencies around the city treat this the same way: Locus Media in HSR Layout, a Google Premier Partner since 2018, and Riven Growth in Whitefield, performance only since 2022, both strip these settings before touching anything else.
What happens if you launch without negative keywords?
You pay to teach yourself what you already know. Before launch, add a campaign level negative list covering free, cheap, cheapest, DIY, how to, tutorial, jobs, vacancy, salary, internship, course, training, and salary. For a service business in Bangalore, also add the neighbouring cities you do not serve.
Rakesh, who runs a two chair salon in HSR Layout, put it well after his first month: he said he had paid about Rs 4,000 to find out that people searching "salon jobs near me" were not going to book a haircut.
Should every conversion action be a primary goal?
No, and this one is subtle. New accounts inherit account level goals, so page views, phone clicks, and form fills often all count as primary. Smart bidding then optimises toward whichever is easiest to generate, which is almost never the one that makes money.
Mark one action as primary, usually a completed form or a call over 60 seconds. Everything else becomes secondary: still measured, no longer steering the bidding. If tracking is not set up properly yet, start there, because none of the rest works without it. Our walkthrough on Google Ads conversion tracking for Bangalore businesses covers it end to end.
Is broad match a reasonable default for a first campaign?
Not while you are still learning what converts. Broad match asks Google to interpret intent, and interpretation needs history your account does not have yet. Start on phrase and exact match, read the search terms report twice a week, and let the real queries tell you which broad themes are worth opening up in month three.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a Bangalore small business budget for a first Google Ads campaign?
Around Rs 500 to Rs 700 a day is the realistic floor for a local service business, which puts you at Rs 15,000 to Rs 21,000 a month. Below Rs 200 a day the campaign collects too little data to optimise. Budget for two months before judging results.
How long does a proper Google Ads account setup take?
A careful first setup runs three to five hours: conversion tracking, campaign and ad group structure, keyword research, negative lists, ad copy, and the settings above. Rushed setups take 40 minutes and cost far more than the time saved.
Can I fix these settings on an account that is already running?
Yes, and it is worth doing immediately. Changing location targeting, networks, and auto apply settings takes about 20 minutes and takes effect the same day. Expect a short dip in impression volume followed by a lower cost per lead.
Getting the setup right on day one costs nothing extra and is the cheapest performance gain available to a new advertiser.
